Preparing to Travel Abroad

Apply for a Passport

If you do not already have a passport, you should begin the application process well in advance of your planned travel abroad.
If you already have a passport, check the expiration date.  It will need to be valid a minimum of 6 months beyond your planned return from abroad. The U.S. Department of State provides a helpful website to help you determine how you need to proceed with your passport application or renewal.  Sometimes you can apply for your passport online or by mail, and sometimes it requires an in-person appearance at an approved passport issuing center (usually a post office near you). See button below for more information on the process and costs.

Does your destination require a student visa? Review your Country Handbook.

The ISEP country handbooks provide a great snapshot of what to expect abroad. Each handbook provides information on educational systems, visa regulations, health and safety, and issues of daily life. Use the buttons below to learn more information on the visa application process as well as your host country.

STEP Registration

The Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) is a free service to allow U.S. citizens and nationals traveling and living abroad to enroll their trip with the nearest U.S. Embassy or Consulate.  Morehouse College strongly recommends student travelers register their trip.  Note:  For students traveling on a Morehouse faculty-led experience, the faculty leader will enroll the entire group; however, for students traveling to an external partner site, please use the button below to register your trip prior to departure.
